Positive Body image

We all love how models look but lets be honest its not everyday people get the chance to look like this and some people have to work really hard to get this body. Girls need to realize sometimes its okay to be in your own skin and be comfortable with your body image no matter what size you are. The great thing about models is they bring a confidence that not every woman has, we need to learn that confidence is something that will take you far and help you get to where you need to be. Next time your feeling down about your appearance learn not to compare yourself to others because everyone is beautiful in their own special way ;)

Need help making the perfect salad?

Here's some ideas of ingredients to use:

Throwback Thurs: Miriam Popp

I was able to set up an interview with the Miriam Popp. She is a young  bi-racial woman who was able to transform her body and take the leap to join fitness competitions. Here is her story:

What influenced your decision to change your living styles when it comes to  fitness and nutrition?

The day before my 29th birthday I decided I needed to get my act together. There was no reason for me to be unhappy in my body. As a teen and child I was ridiculously skinny. In my 20's I put on a lot of weight and I kept letting the pounds pile on. It was easy to go out with friends and order whatever I wanted with a couple of drinks. I wanted to go into my 30's with a healthier lifestyle and outlook on life. I was determined to kick 30's butt. I wanted more than anything to take ownership of where I was physically and do something about it.

Has your goal been accomplished and how long did it take you to get to your goal?

I never had a goal weight. I just wanted to be able to go into a fitting room, try clothes on and feel amazing.  You could line up three women all the same weight and it could look completely different on each one. My goal is a lifetime goal. I hope to eat clean and workout for as long as I can. I have been blessed with this body and I want to treat it right for as long as I can.

Who are your influences and what helped you get to where you are?

After working out for 6 months on my own with the help of free videos I found on the internet, I contacted an old friend who has a fitness studio a few towns away from where I live. She actually asked me if I had ever thought of competing in a fitness competition. I looked at her as if she was crazy. She thought it would be a great goal for me. Needless to say I agreed to compete and that's when everything changed. She hooked me up with a competition coach who supplied support, guidance, my workouts and meal plan. My competition coach is all about fueling your body with real food. No gimmicks, no pills, no shakes just real clean food.

What is your daily regimen?

I eat 6 clean meals a day, protein and green veggies at every meal with a couple of servings of fruit, starch and good fat. Most mornings I'm at the gym by 6am. I do 30-40 minutes of cardio but here is the important part... I lift weights…heavy weights. Everyday is a different group of muscles. This morning was back and triceps, tomorrow will be shoulders and core. Lifting weights is the only way for a woman to shape and mold her body.

What advice would you give to other African American women who went through the same health struggle and trying to live healthier?

Get healthy for you. Pour so much love over yourself that peoples outside opinions don't matter. Make yourself your main priority. I put myself first in my journey. If people didn't understand why I couldn't go out that night it was their problem not mine. When people would ask why I was eating the way I was I would say it was for my future self. My fitness has become a huge part of my life. When I finish my workout every morning I feel accomplished and ready for my day.
What's next for you in the future?

Now that I've competed in three fitness competitions, I would really love to do some fitness modeling. Next month, I'm shooting with a fabulous photographer out in California. Ill use these photos as part of my growing portfolio. The photos will also be a visual tool for me to remind myself of how far I've come. Sometimes it can be hard to see your own progress.Photos have been a great reminder of where I've been and how far I've come. I also plan on competing again next April 2014. If I miss the stage that much I might just compete again in November 2013.

Is there's anything else you want the readers to know?

I want to add in to keep people around you who support and love you. The support of my friends and family is what has kept me on my journey. Having my friends, family and coach hold me accountable has also been a huge factor. I tell my loved ones exactly where I'm at in my training. They keep me honest. The more they know about my process/journey the more they can help pick me up when I falter.  Also, listen to your body. There are mornings where my body needs the extra sleep more than the workout. There are foods that I've learned my body doesn't react well to. I pay attention to what my body needs and I try to provide that.

Throwback Thurs: Ciara Porter

This a first of many posts on women's personal journey through living healthier. I was able to interview a 22 year old William Paterson University student Ciara Porter on her journey to a healthy living style.

What influenced your decision to change you living style as far as exercise and eating?
Besides just wanting to look better for myself, my main influence was spring break. As silly as it sound, since I was traveling out the country, I wanted to look the best I can, and be able to wear certain clothing items, that I choose not to wear because of how I looked. After I awhile I fell in love with gym and dieting and it changed from a temporary goal to a permanent motivation and lifestyle. And I found out that just because food is healthy doesn’t mean it will taste bad.

Has your goal been accomplished and if so how long did it take you?
I decided to actually change the way I eat and start exercising in the middle of February. I had set a goal of 20 pounds for March 17th, only because that’s when my spring break would start. It took a week longer than expected but I accomplished the 20 pounds by March 23rd. At this point I’ve become used to the dieting lifestyle, so I was comfortable in making it a permanent lifestyle. I had set another small goal for April of losing 10 more pounds because I thought losing the 20 pounds my body was going to look how I wanted it but it didn’t. At the point I stopped worrying about the number on the scale and started looking at the mirror, and ask myself is this how I want my body to look or could it look better . As of the first week of April, I lost 33 pounds So I’ve lost more than I expected earlier than I had thought and now I’m just trying to maintain the weight I’m currently at, because now I love the way my body looks.

Who are your influences and what helped you get to where you are?
My influences throughout this process were my friends, my older brother, and my friend who is a personal trainer. Me and my friends sort of looked at it as a challenge or a small competition kind of like the biggest loser type thing, and us working out together, became a motivation to keep going. My older brother recently changed his whole lifestyle and became this extra healthy person and just looking at what he has accomplished , with working full time and taking care of his child has motivated me. My friend /trainer made sure I didn’t quit, and was doing and eating the right things that will specifically help my body.

What is your daily regimen?
As far as exercising, I go to the gym for two hrs. a day than I do about 4 laps on the track, run for 2 and walk for 2, I do this 4 to 5 days a week. Usually If I wake up early for breakfast I would either have an apple with yogurt or a bowl of cereal. Since some of my meals won’t necessarily always be healthy later on in the day. For lunch and dinner, since I eat in smaller portions, I usually split up 1 meal to be my dinner and lunch, since I get full easily. So I generally eat less and start my day off as healthy as I can. I gave up soda and I only drink water, and if I really want juice I always mix half with water. The biggest thing that helped me lose my weight was not eating after 9.

What advice would you give to other African American women who went through the same health struggle and are trying to live healthier?
Changing your lifestyle is hard at first, but you ultimately have to find what works for you. For some, eating less and exercising works for others just eating healthy works. You just have to find what works for you and your body. If you really want to change your physical appearance, you just have to not think about the process but the end result, and once you start seeing results you are going to appreciate the hard work you put in to get there, and that will be motivation all on its own. And it not only makes you physically look better but you would feel better internally and it will take away a tremendous amount of health risks that women of color are subject to.

Is there's anything else you want the readers to know?
You don't have to give up the foods you love you just have to eat less of it, and once you start your body will get used to the change and the food, and it will be hard for you to go back to the way you used to be.

Trying to get over your sickness and medicine not working fast enough Here are some foods that can help you along the process of getting better:

Fat Burning Meal: Lemon- Walnut Chicken

Lemon-Walnut Chicken

Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 10 minutes
Makes: 4 servings
Ingredients
2 tablespoons very finely chopped parsley*
2 tablespoons very finely chopped toasted walnuts*
1/4 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest
4 medium skinless, boneless chicken breast halves, pounded to 1/2-inch thickness
2 teaspoons all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
3 tablespoons diced shallots
1/4 cup low-sodium chicken broth
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice, plus lemon wedges for serving
1 1/4 cups brown basmati rice, steamed
Directions
1. In a small bowl, mix together the parsley, walnuts, and lemon zest. Dust the chicken with the flour and season with the salt and black pepper.
2. In a very large skillet (or two medium-large skillets), heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the shallots and saute until they begin to turn translucent, 1 minute. Push the shallots to one side of the pan, add the chicken breasts, and cook until golden, about 2 minutes per side.
3. Pour the chicken broth and lemon juice into the pan. Cover, and let simmer over low heat until the juices run clear when the chicken is pierced, 3 to 4 more minutes.
4. Use tongs to transfer the chicken to a serving dish, leaving the liquid and shallots in the pan. Bring the liquid to a boil over medium heat and stir until thickened, 1 minute. Stir in the parsley mixture. Pour the sauce over the chicken and serve over the rice with the lemon wedges.
*Use a mini food processor to reduce chopping time.

Health benefits to Juicing

Pre-Workout Meals

Workout Beverages

Coffee or Green Tea
Caffeine increases your endurance because it changes how your body uses fat. Caffeine helps your body convert fat into readily accessible energy, so you can work out for longer. As an added bonus, studies have also shown that caffeine consumption helps reduce post-workout DOMS.

Green Juice
Rich in natural sugars, antioxidants, and phytonutrients, a homemade green juice is a glass full of easily absorbable nutrients, especially iron, which can combat your sleepy slump. And because green juice recipes are high in carbs but low in fiber, it helps give the body energy while also being easy to digest. Perfect if you need something on the way into the gym.

Apple Cider Vinegar
This is rich in minerals, vitamins, and beneficial acids. For an energy booster sans caffeine, mix a tablespoon or two of apple cider vinegar in a cup of water and drink prior to a workout. Look for raw and unfiltered varieties to get the most nutrients possible. A small study also links apple cider vinegar to improved weight loss.

Pre-workout Sports Beverages
Gatorade, Vega Sport, and Biosteel High Performance offer sports drinks that are developed specifically for before workouts. Each drink is formulated with ingredients to help stimulate and energize the body. We recommend these drinks for more intense or longer workouts.

Info on cleansing

I have been doing some research on cleansing. Many people do it to quickly shed those pounds but in no way is that healthy if you are only juicing. I am honestly looking into it because i want to rid my body of all the toxins and impurities without dying in the process lol.

Before you start a cleanse remember to PREPARE PREPARE PREPARE!!!!!
This is definitely something your body is not used to and you have to be smart in doing this because if done wrong can cause some medical problems and we wouldn't want that.

The more prepared you are before your cleanse, the smoother your transition will be. This means a few days leading up to your cleanse, cut down on all those delicious indulgences we love to love and phase out: the coffee, the sugar, the meat and the dairy, and add fresh fruit, greens and veggies at every meal.

3 Days before – If you eat meat, you should phase it out now - lightly steamed or poached fish, with veggies and a salad of course!
2 Days before - Green salads should be your staple at this point. If you’re craving some more sustenance, you may choose a bit of plain brown rice, or a yam or sweet potato.
1 Day before - Raw or lightly steamed vegetables, e.g. spinach, broccoli; try and avoid the more starchy veggies like carrots, beets, squash etc. You may also have a raw green leafy salad with some vegetables.

The Benifits:
When you feel better on the inside, you look better on the outside. Glowing skin, bright eyes, the disappearance of hard-to-lose pounds, as well as a newfound sense of optimism and enjoyment of life, are all common results of juice cleansing.
